new album: Magical Soundtracks - Award-winning Guitar Film Scores

ENGLISH: I am delighted that the best of my film soundtracks are now available on a digital album (stream the album on the platform of your choice).

Music from award-winning films such as “Der Goalie bin ig” (by Sabine Boss and Pedro Lenz), “Am Rande der Zeiten” (by Jörg Reichlin and Hans Schellenberg), from documentaries such as “Ein Duft von Freiheit” (by Beat Bieri and Ruedi Leuthold), the wonderful TV documentary series about bear researcher Reno Sommerhalder (by Beat Bieri), and several commercials in the USA.

I selected the tracks so that, ideally, the whole thing sounds like a unique movie; for diving in and chilling out with plenty of contrast.

Despite my love of songwriting, instrumental music was my first love. That's why three recordings from the 1980s and 1990s are also included:

“Children of War” (1987), “Cuts need love to help them heal” (1992), and “Envole-toi” (1996, featuring the phenomenal Jens Kruger on banjo, among others). These three pieces didn’t end up in any film, but they come from my mental cinema and thus still fit into the genre.

The biggest challenge is to sketch emotions with just one instrument; a good half of the tracks here are solo recordings. And, by the way, for almost 40 years now, I have been accompanied mainly by the same four guitars: the Dobro, the Martin, the PRS, and the Fender Telecaster Custom. On this album, you can hear these wonderful instruments in all their glory.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the filmmakers mentioned above for allowing me to play a small part in their great works. And to Peter von Siebenthal for the inspiring musical collaboration in the film “Der Goalie bin ig.”

Musik aus preisgekrönten Filmen wie «Der Goalie bin ig» (von Sabine Boss und Pedro Lenz), «Am Rande der Zeiten» (von Jörg Reichlin und Hans Schellenberg), aus Dokumentarfilmen wie «Ein Duft von Freiheit» (von Beat Bieri und Ruedi Leuthold), der wunderbaren TV-Doku-Reihe über Bärenforscher Reno Sommerhalder (von Beat Bieri) sowie einigen Werbespots in den USA.

Ich habe die Tracks so ausgewählt, dass sich das Ganze im Idealfall wiederum anhört wie ein einziger Film; zum Eintauchen und kontrastreichen Chillen.

Bei aller Liebe zum Songwriting – Instrumentalmusik was my first love. Deshalb sind auch drei Aufnahmen aus den 1980er- bzw. 1990er-Jahren mit dabei: «Children of War» (1987), «Cuts need love to help them heal» (1992) und «Envole-toi» (1996, u.a. mit dem phänomenalen Jens Krüger am Banjo). Diese drei Stücke sind in keinem Film gelandet, doch sie stammen aus meinem Kopfkino und passen somit dennoch ins Genre.

Die grösste Herausforderungen ist, mit nur einem einzigen Instrument skizzenhaft Emotionen zu zeichnen; gut die Hälfte der Tracks hier sind denn auch Solo-Aufnahmen. Und es sind seit bald 40 Jahren übrigens dieselben vier Gitarren, die mich hauptsächlich begleiten: die Dobro, die Martin, die PRS und die Fender Telecaster-Custom. Auf diesem Album hier hört man diese wunderbaren Instrumente in ihrer vollen Pracht.

Ich bedanke mich bei den oben genannten Filmemacher:innen ganz herzlich dafür, dass ich bei ihren grossartigen Werken eine kleine Rolle spielen durfte. Und bei Peter von Siebenthal für die inspirierende musikalische Zusammenarbeit im Film «Der Goalie bin ig».

J'ai sélectionné les morceaux de manière à ce que l'ensemble sonne idéalement comme un seul et même film, pour une immersion totale et une détente contrastée.

Malgré tout mon amour pour la chanson, la musique instrumentale a été mon premier amour. C'est pourquoi trois enregistrements des années 1980 et 1990 sont également inclus : « Children of War » (1987), « Cuts need love to help them heal » (1992) et « Envole-toi » (1996, avec entre autres le phénoménal Jens Krüger au banjo). Ces trois morceaux n'ont été utilisés dans aucun film, mais ils sont issus de mon cinéma mental et s'inscrivent donc tout de même dans le genre.

Le plus grand défi est de dessiner des émotions de manière esquissée avec un seul instrument ; une bonne moitié des morceaux ici sont donc des enregistrements en solo. Et d'ailleurs, depuis près de 40 ans, ce sont les quatre mêmes guitares qui m'accompagnent principalement : la Dobro, la Martin, la PRS et la Fender Telecaster-Custom. Sur cet album, on peut entendre ces merveilleux instruments dans toute leur splendeur.
